wings fans know...
game 3 win!
Wings win Game 3, 4-3! That gives us a 3-0 series lead for the first time since the 2000 Western Conference Quarterfinals against Los Angeles. Here's hoping we close it out on Thursday...

in response to "People's Music New Location"...
Original blog post here by Nicole.
Holy fuckin' memories. To this very day, I won't even call them "bootlegs" anymore, but instead "imports" because of that lady at Hot Hits. I've sold off a lot of my old CDs, but I still have that NIN collection that I drove myself mad finding. And my Stabbing CDs (including the VMS single...I was still the first of us to find that thing!).
I miss the days of the hunt like that.
Getting the Japanese import of TDS at Rock-A-Billy's as well as the original pressings of Purest Feeling, Demos & Remixes and Solid Gold Hell. Gravity Kills' "Enough" remixes on vinyl at Record Time, well before their remix CD released. SMG's "Hole In The Ground" and Stabbing's "Lies" promo singles, both on vinyl and CD. It's that important stuff that I never sold off, partly because I still love the music, but also partly because it was hard as hell for me to get that stuff in the first place. I don't even want to think how much I could get for my NIN collection on eBay, because it's probably nowhere near enough in my eyes. Especially for cash that would probably just pay some bills.
Admittedly, I haven't done much searching in Jersey for places like Hot Hits or Absolute (especially since most of the stuff I buy these days is indie stuff direct from the artists), but places like that seem to be few and far between out here. There's an indie shop out here that has a couple locations, but the last time I was in there, it didn't impress me too much. Too...well, corporate music.
This conjures memories of when Avery and I foolishly went to Flint looking for some indie record stores. We ended up in one that had bars all over the windows. We walked in and some gangsta rap was playing, rap and R&B posters all over the place. When we walked in, it was like the biker bar scene in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure - two lost white boys as Pee-Wee and a whole lot of black urbanites as the bikers. Needless to say, we didn't stay in there too long. I doubt that shop had a used industrial bin.
I think one thing that's eliminated the mystique of the import-hunt is the fact that a lot of bands, from what I've read, are now starting to record their shows on site, throwing them onto a CD or flash drive in MP3 form and selling them for $5 or so. And honestly, that's brilliant. There are tons of shows I've been to for which I'd love to have a copy, just to say, "Hey, I was at this show and I remember when this happened!". Stabbing, SMG, Apop, that loud-as-hell GK show in the basement of St. Andrew's, all the Midtown shows I went to out here (all the live Midtown stuff is shit quality on YouTube, unfortunately) or even that last Soundgarden show we went to at the Palace with the 20 minute long ending to "Jesus Christ Pose". Which show was it where the lights went out and the lead singer popped out a flashlight and said, "We don't need any fucking lights!"? Stabbing at Clutch Cargo's, maybe? It's so damn hard for me to remember now.
It all kills the hunt...but admit it, we would have killed to have easily accessible copies of these shows for $5 a pop on the night of the show rather than paying $30-$40 for an "import" at one of the shops, no matter how devoted we were to them. I mean, shit, that $40 back then would have bought a couple cartons of smokes. Avery and I rolled pennies, bent over for a Canadian quarter and borrowed money from Phil when we couldn't afford the damn things. But that's a tangent for another day.
Reminiscing is a good way to spend a Friday afternoon at work, that's for damn sure.

semifinals begin today!
The nerves haven't quite set in yet for tonight's game against the Avs, but I know they will by gametime. The second round doesn't seem to drive me as crazy as the first - unless we get into trouble, that is. Then it's Xanax time.
Since I did pretty well with my series picks for the first round (went 7-for-8 with two series picked exactly right in terms of number of games), here's my second round picks, predicted series winner in bold.
DET/COL: 4-2
SJ/DAL: 4-3
MON/PHI: 4-2
PIT/NYR: 4-1

a good hockey day.
Not only did the Wings dispatch the Predators in Game 6 today to advance to the next round...but the Anaheim Goons, er, Ducks were just eliminated by the Dallas Stars in their Game 6 tonight. Once again, the defending Cup champs can't advance past the 1st round the following season. Hell, they were lucky to even make the playoffs with the selfish game-playing by Teemu Selanne and Scott "Needavacation" Niedermayer. Guess part-time players just won't cut it! Bubbye, you lousy bunch of goons! Have fun on the golf course!

urgh.
Well, that game was a wash last night. 2-2 series tie. And if I'll be ecstatic if I don't see Hasek in net for the rest of the playoffs. If Babcock starts him in Game 5, I'm guessing it'll be series over in six, with Nashville winning. I was so damn frustrated with the game that I didn't even get to sleep until after 1am.

C'mon, guys. I want to see a 3-1 series lead tonight.

vandalism.
I'm not sure why I'm surprised when I find department equipment around campus either vandalized or damaged by unknown parties.
This morning, I came in to find that someone had inexplicably cut the end off an RCA cable attached to a DVD/VCR deck. And yes, it was cut, not torn off. Why? Reminds me of the time a few years ago when someone cut off the power plug off one of my overhead projectors. Such a lack of maturity and respect for property on this campus.
But that doesn't even come close to what I found when I was here at work yesterday (Sunday). In one of the rooms in the Student Center, I have an overhead projector that basically floats between rooms as needed. Apparently some bigot decided to write on the glass with permanent marker, and I quote, "Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve! Gay is not the way!". It's a shame that I don't know for certain who did it (although I have a pretty damn good idea), because that would be a wonderful bit of hate speech to reveal to the administration here on campus, coupled with defacing university property.
I can't wait for the summer to get here. I'm officially tired of the students this semester.

I want someone to find me a Hartford Whalers Brendan Shanahan jersey, #94 (with the captain's 'C'), size: large.
I would very much like one of those for my birthday.

kickin' it old school.
People, people, people...when will you learn that these...

...are old, old, old technology? Yet still I run across people who are shocked, shocked, shocked that we only own two working carousel projectors, despite the fact that Kodak discontinued their production of the carousel projector back in October of 2004. Don't believe me? Look at Kodak's official archival page for them.
