george carlin has died.

One of my absolute favorite comedians - hell, one of my favorite people in the world - has died.

George Carlin, dead at 71.

Celebrity deaths don't choke me up...but this one really has. One of the most influential comics the world has ever known, plus I just respected the hell out of the man for what he had to say. He'll be greatly, greatly missed.

miles to go and all that...

My sleep rhythms have been royally screwed lately and I'm not totally sure why. Over the weekend (or it may have been Thursday night - my memory's shot too), I was up until about 4:30am working on video stuff, but I think that was more a result than a cause.

As it stands right now, it's a little after 1am and I am, once again, working on video stuff and not really tired. When I say "not really tired", it means I could probably fall asleep given maybe 30 minutes of tossing and turning in bed, trying to get comfortable and generally annoying the hell out of Danielle. But for at least the past week or so, I just haven't been purely tired. In that week, I think I took one mid-day nap. On Sunday, I think I slept for maybe an hour and a half in the early evening. Again, definitely not a cause of my screwed-up rhythms, just another result. Oddly enough, I think I made it to bed around midnight last night, so I think the nap may have helped more than it hurt.

Shooting dance recitals this weekend, I felt especially tired on Saturday, but that was probably just a result of standing at my camera shooting for most of the day (was on location from 12noon until almost 11pm) and sitting playing PSP during the downtime.

Speaking of the recitals, I saw a dance routine on Saturday that was really impressive, not necessarily for its technique, but just for the basic idea and music. The dancers came out wearing gruesome skull masks and did a tap number to Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People". Just when I think I've seen it all in my time shooting video...

So, again, here I sit and now it's even more after 1am and I really don't feel that I'll actually feel my head hit the pillow until sometime after 2am. And yes, I do have to work in the morning, but it's not as though I've had problems getting up either. Maybe my subconscious has taken this article on necessary hours of sleep (sent to me by Danielle last Wednesday) to heart and my body's trying to get by on 5-7 hours of sleep. Might make sense, considering that's about the time my rhythms started going haywire on me, but I'm probably just grasping at straws.

I'll let this next DVD finish its authoring encode and I'll try and get some rest. I know I'm going to need some before Wednesday, because that's going to be a total clusterfuck at work due to orientation events being hosted by Student Life throughout the day. Not necessarily complicated equipment setups, just a lot of back-and-forth stuff. Especially a point where the just-heavy-and-awkward-enough-to-be-annoying portable amp/speakers has to move across campus with a mere 30 minutes between its uses. And lucky, lucky me...the forecast is showing rain for the rest of the week. That should be fun.

DVD's at 56%...another 10 minutes left...2am's sounding more and more likely...

higher IQs = more likely to be athiest/agnostic?

Interesting study.

But, unfortunately, it's probably a false causal relationship there. It's kind of like those studies that say children who eat dinner with their family at the dinner table do better in school. Well, is it because they eat dinner at the dinner table? Or is eating dinner at the dinner table just one element of a supportive family environment that fosters better learning?

It may very well be true that people like myself (seriously, I was tested with a 145 IQ when I was four or five, so this isn't just swaggering internet braggadocio on my part) with higher IQs tend to lean more toward athiesm. But is that the main factor that connects us to athiesm or are higher IQs simply an element of a broader reason?

Dominik Hasek made it official Monday morning: He has played his last NHL game.

Hasek, 43, announced his retirement at a press conference at Joe Louis Arena. It is not the first time he has done so – he retired after winning the Stanley Cup in 2002 only to return a year later – but this time, there is little doubt his decision will stick.

"It's time to say goodbye," Hasek said.

Hasek was hobbled this past season by various injuries and struggled so much midway through the first round he was replaced by Chris Osgood.

Osgood, in turn, played so well in leading the Wings to the Stanley Cup last Wednesday that he has claimed the no. 1 job come next season. Hasek never has been about taking a back seat, and so, faced with the prospect of being a back-up, he opted to retire.

He will go down in hockey history as one of the most unconventional, and greatest, goaltenders. Among his accomplishments he has won the Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold medal, and six Vezina trophies as the NHL’s top goaltender.

With Hasek gone, that opens up room for Jimmy Howard, the “goalie-of-the-future” to get his feet wet next season backing up Osgood.

this is what a stanley cup celebration looks like.

And this is just the rally in Hart Plaza and doesn't include the parade route.

Take note, Anaheim. THAT is a victory parade...not a kegger in a parking lot.
